Silhouetted Stone Gate Amid Dry Poppies

by Piper Munoz

Late afternoon light breaks through thinning storm clouds to cast the ancient stone tower into a sharp, dark silhouette. The weathered masonry rises from a sloping field where dry-season poppies have turned to brittle, brown stalks and fallen petals. Behind the ruin, the sky glows with a pale, diffused white that strips the structure of all color, leaving only its jagged outline against the clearing horizon. The ground slopes steeply downward, covered in a carpet of withered red and orange debris that contrasts with the gray stone. A heavy, still air hangs over the landscape, visible in the way the low light flattens the texture of the crumbling mortar and the dry earth.
