Crumbling Aqueduct Arches in Colombian Valley

by Paula Pratt

Weathered stone arches rise from a dry valley floor beneath a harsh midday sky. The ancient masonry shows deep erosion, with crumbling edges and exposed aggregate catching the direct mountain light. Heat shimmer distorts the air above the sun-baked ground, blurring the boundary between the stone and the dusty earth. Dry autumn grasses rest on the base of the structure, their brown stalks contrasting against the gray concrete. The low angle emphasizes the towering height of the remaining columns, casting sharp shadows that cut across the uneven terrain. A fractured section of the top arch reveals the hollow interior against the bright, cloudless blue.
