Morning Light in Auckland

Morning light spills over the corrugated iron roof of a weatherboard house in Ponsonby, catching the wet pavement below where a delivery van idles. On the porch, a pair of gardening gloves rests beside a faded majolica plate used as a makeshift ashtray, its blue and white pattern chipped at the rim. A knitted blanket, likely from a nearby basket, drapes over the railing, its fringe brushing against the peeling white paint of the post.
