Lunar Hydrothermal Vent Tube Worms in near San Francisco

Lunar Hydrothermal Vent Tube Worms

by Beverly Cummings

Vibrant orange tube worms cluster tightly around a dark, jagged vent opening, their feathery plumes extending into empty space. Above the biological formation, a stark black sky replaces the ocean, broken only by a distant, sharp horizon line where low sun light creates a thin, glowing haze. Hard, airless sunlight strikes the scene from a high angle, casting deep, unsoftened shadows against the vent's rough, mineral crust. Tiny suspended particles glitter like diamond dust in the vacuum around the worms, catching the direct light. The ground beneath the vent is gray, cratered lunar regolith, devoid of water, yet the biological forms appear fully submerged in an invisible medium. One worm tip glows with an internal, bioluminescent pulse against the black void.
