Lithops Colony in Misty Dawn Gravel Near Cucuta

by Eugene Massey

Low-hanging clouds hang heavy over a bed of coarse, angular gravel near Cúcuta, filtering the nautical dawn into a soft, gray wash. A cluster of lithops living stones emerges from the stony substrate, their fleshy, paired leaves mimicking the surrounding pebbles with startling precision. The dry season has stripped the landscape of green, leaving only the muted greens, tans, and grays of the succulents and rock. Mist rests on the ground, softening the sharp edges of the stones while highlighting the subtle, translucent windows on the plant tips. The composition places the colony off-center, allowing the vast, foggy expanse of the gravel field to stretch into the background. One shadow falls beneath the lowest leaf, anchoring the subject to the rough earth.
