Lithops Colony on Winter Cliff Edge at Dusk in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Lanzhou

Lithops Colony on Winter Cliff Edge at Dusk

by Nancy Escobar

Tiny succulent stones cluster tightly on dark, wet gravel along a rugged cliff edge. Rain slicks the pale gray and tan surfaces of the lithops, turning them into smooth, glassy pebbles that blend seamlessly with the surrounding stones. The heavy winter air hangs low, visible only as a fine mist clinging to the plant bodies. Behind the immediate foreground, layers of the cliff recede into shadow while a distant town glows with warm orange lights on the horizon. The light from the settlement reflects softly on the wet gravel, creating small, scattered points of warmth against the cool, steel-gray tones of the stormy evening. Each leaf tip holds a microscopic droplet of water that catches the fading ambient light.
