Lithops Colony Silhouetted by Dawn Lighthouse Beam in in Zambia

Lithops Colony Silhouetted by Dawn Lighthouse Beam

by Kate Byrd

A sudden sweep of artificial light cuts through low-hanging clouds over the Zambian dry season landscape before dawn. A cluster of lithops rests on coarse, reddish gravel, their stone-like forms rendered as stark black silhouettes against the bright beam. The dry season air leaves the succulent leaves dry and matte, their characteristic windows completely hidden in shadow. Dust particles hang suspended in the illuminated column, creating a visible path of light that terminates abruptly at the ground. The contrast between the deep black shapes and the piercing white glow defines the scene. One leaf edge catches a faint rim of light where it meets the gravel.
