Toadstool Colony on Mossy Boulder at Dawn in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge in the Outback

Toadstool Colony on Mossy Boulder at Dawn

by Andrew Fischer

Pale grey mist clings to a weathered boulder capped in thick, damp moss. A cluster of small toadstools rises from the green carpet, their caps soft and rounded against the rough stone. The light is a cool, diffused grey, typical of pre-dawn silence. Salt spray has bleached the rock surface, leaving a white crust along the edges where wind has scoured the stone for years. Sparse grass blades bend sharply under the force of the gusts, showing constant motion despite the stillness of the fungi. The moss holds moisture, glistening faintly in the low light. One shadow stretches across the boulder's face, defined by the angle of the rising sun. The textures of stone, fungus, and plant life merge at the boundary of the frame.
