Narrowboat in Iceland Brick Tunnel in along a switchback approach in Iceland

Narrowboat in Iceland Brick Tunnel

by Giselle Huff

Soft gray light falls through the damp air of an early afternoon in Iceland's brief arctic summer. A narrowboat moves slowly along the switchback approach, its dark hull cutting through the still water. The canal walls are constructed of rough, moss-covered brick, curving gently into a tunnel entrance. Light rain creates a fine mist on the water's surface, where the boat and brick arches reflect perfectly to form a mirrored composition. Droplets rest on the red bricks, darkening their texture. The water's edge meets the stone with a sharp, wet line, and the tunnel's interior remains a deep, shadowed void against the pale sky.
