Winter Dry Dock Ship Hull Alaska Harbor in beside a fogbound harbor mouth in Alaska

Winter Dry Dock Ship Hull Alaska Harbor

by Catherine Gomez

Rust-red steel plates of a massive ship hull rise from a concrete dry dock, their weathered surfaces catching the low, pale glow of a late afternoon. Snowflakes drift slowly through the air, settling on the industrial metal and the surrounding wet concrete. The harbor mouth beyond is swallowed by thick gray fog, blurring the line between water and sky. Reflected light from the calm, dark water below bounces up onto the hull's underbelly, creating a soft, mirrored symmetry. Patches of white snow contrast against the dark, oil-stained metal and the gray concrete blocks of the dock. One, small red buoy floats motionless in the reflected water near the edge of the frame.
