Horsetail Colony Surreal Shadows Cuba Marsh in in a bloom-heavy meadow in Cuba

Horsetail Colony Surreal Shadows Cuba Marsh

by Philip Espinoza

Green horsetail stalks rise densely from the muddy riverbank, their segmented joints glistening under a heavy monsoon sky. Overcast light washes the meadow in a flat, soft gray, yet the shadows cast by the plants stretch backward toward the bright sky instead of away from it. Wind whips the feathery tops of the horsetails, bending them sharply to the left while their elongated dark shadows point right. Wet earth rests on the base of the stems, mixing with scattered river debris and small green shoots. The impossible geometry of the shadows creates a visual dissonance against the otherwise realistic texture of the damp soil and the swaying vegetation. One shadow tip rests on a puddle reflecting the gray clouds above.
