Derelict Harbor Crane in Hokkaido Sunrise

by Kim McCormick

Rust-red iron stretches across a pale gray sky, its massive jib frozen in a mid-swing arc above the frozen harbor floor. Early spring thaw leaves patches of slush clinging to the concrete, reflecting the first sharp rays of sunrise that cut through the cool stillness. The crane's lattice structure casts long, jagged shadows that slice across the wet ground, highlighting the texture of peeling paint and corroded bolts. Snow lingers in the crevices of the metal framework, melting slowly under the warming light. One gull perches on the highest beam, its white feathers stark against the orange glow of the dawn. The bird's shadow falls sharply on the rusted railing below.
