Autumn Beech Forest Floor with Copper Leaves
by Jo Ramsey
Copper and rust hues blanket the forest floor where ancient beech trees stand tall in a Liberian landscape. Late afternoon sunlight falls through the canopy, illuminating the thick carpet of fallen leaves that covers the ground. Patches of ground fog nestle in the low depressions between roots and rocks, creating soft white drifts against the warm earth tones. The light hits the textured surfaces of the leaves, highlighting their dry, crinkled edges and the way they overlap in layers. Sturdy tree trunks rise vertically from the leafy bed, their bark rough and gray against the vibrant foliage. A shallow stream meanders through the foggy area, its surface reflecting the soft sky and surrounding branches. at the edge is a single beech leaf resting on a wet stone near the water's edge, its veins clearly visible.
