Sodium Light Pumping Station Along Salalah Levee

by Cindy Hodge

Amber sodium vapor light washes over a rusted steel pumping station perched above the dark, rising floodwater of a Salalah levee. Peeling paint flakes from the vertical walls, revealing layers of gray primer beneath the original coat. Heavy iron ladders ascend alongside massive pressure gauges, their glass faces reflecting the hazy, orange glow. A thin layer of fog rests on the structural beams, softening the sharp edges of the machinery. The water below remains still and black, against the artificial brightness of the metalwork. Rust streaks run vertically down the steel supports, marking the passage of time against the engineered clarity of the pipes and valves.
