Fisherman Hauling Crab Pot Near Salvador Volcanic Drop-off

by Tom Morrow

Soft afternoon light falls through exceptionally clear water, illuminating a fisherman hauling a weathered crab pot from a deep volcanic drop-off beside Salvador. The water surface holds slow-moving ripples that distort the sky's pale blue reflection. Thick ropes stretch taut from the fisherman's hands, disappearing into the luminous submerged depths where the dark volcanic rock face rises vertically. Salt crystals glint on the wet rope fibers, and the fisherman's soaked clothing clings to his frame as he lifts the heavy, algae-encrusted metal cage. Bubbles rise lazily from the submerged gear, catching the gentle glow of the rain-washed sky. at the edge shows a cluster of barnacles clinging to the rusted corner of the pot, marking the boundary between the air and the deep.
