Tilting Minaret Mosque Midnight Glow in at the foot of a stone altar in Isfahan

Tilting Minaret Mosque Midnight Glow

by Clayton Coleman

Dust particles hang suspended in vertical shafts of warm light cutting through the dark interior of an Isfahan mosque. A stone altar anchors the foreground, its rough surface catching the glow from overhead string lights that drape across the ceiling. The room is framed by an archway, creating a window into the space where a minaret leans precariously against the back wall. The dry season air is still, settling in layers of fine grit on the cracked plaster. Shadows stretch long and sharp from the hanging bulbs, illuminating the dangerous angle of the tower. One crack runs down the stone base of the altar, splitting the light.
