Winter Sunset Light in Redwood Cathedral Altar
by Levi Short
Warm golden hour rays pierce the high canopy of a redwood cathedral, illuminating dust particles that drift through the still air. The light strikes a rough-hewn stone altar positioned at the foot of towering timber columns, casting long, soft shadows across the dark floor. Deep winter is evident in the bare, skeletal branches visible through high clerestory windows, against the rich, reddish-brown grain of the ancient wood. Smooth stone surfaces near the altar catch the glow, creating subtle, shimmering reflections that ripple across the cool gray masonry. The composition places the altar slightly off-center, drawing the eye upward along the vertical lines of the trunks toward the bright, hazy sky. A final beam of sunlight rests on the textured edge of the stone, highlighting its weathered imperfections.
