Diver Inspects Specimen Jars on Stern Rail at Night
by Laila Hobbs
Warm orange light from distant street lamps spills across the sun-bleached stern rail of a vessel near Mbuji-Mayi. A research diver in dark gear stands beside the rail, hands steady as they inspect glass specimen jars. Condensation beads heavily on the cold metal housings, catching the artificial light in tiny, sharp highlights. The night sky above is a deep, uniform black, devoid of stars, suggesting heavy cloud cover or light pollution. The diver's posture is rigid with focus, shoulders hunched slightly forward. Glass surfaces reflect the ambient glow, creating soft, distorted patches of light against the dark rubber of the diver's suit. The metal railing shows signs of salt weathering, its paint flaking in rough patches near the joints. A small drop of water slides slowly down the curved glass of the nearest jar.
