Research Diver Surfacing at Dawn Beside Skiff
by Finn Davila
Heavy gray clouds hang low over the murky waters near Baqubah, casting a flat, diffuse light across the river surface. A research diver breaks the water beside a weathered science skiff, their dark wetsuit against the pale, churning foam around the hull. Sidelight from the rising sun skims across the wet rubber of the dry suit, highlighting the texture of condensation on the zipper and the rough weave of the climbing rope draped over the gunwale. The boat sits low in the water, its aluminum sides reflecting the muted autumn sky. Water drips steadily from the diver's mask onto the deck, pooling briefly before being absorbed by the damp wood. The diver's gloved hand rests firmly on the skiff's edge, stabilizing their ascent against the gentle current.
