Diver Descends Into Predawn Drizzle
by Sergio Stout
Pale dawn light skims the wet surface of the Vavoua dock ladder where a research diver descends into calm water. Fine rain speckles the metal rungs and the diver's dark wetsuit. The water reflects the sky in muted blues and grays, disturbed only by the diver's slow entry. Shadows cast by the ladder rails and the diver's body stretch backward, defying the light source above. This impossible reversal creates a stark visual tension against the precise, analytical calm of the moment. Raindrops rest on the diver's hood, and the water ripples outward in perfect circles. The turn of seasons is visible in the damp, heavy air that settles on the metal. One drop slides down a rusted rail, tracing a path of silver against the dark iron.
