Diver descending into blue corridor in at a harbor quay near Hsinchu

Diver descending into blue corridor

by Layla Lambert

Orange low-angle light from the setting sun illuminates a harbor quay near Hsinchu, casting long shadows across wet concrete. A diver in dark gear descends backward into a vertical shaft of deep blue water that begins at the edge of the dock. Above, heavy monsoon clouds obscure the sky in shades of slate gray. The impossible element manifests as a corridor extending visibly farther than the building that contains it, its walls receding into the water where the diver swims. The structure's orange glow contrasts with the cool blue depth, while the wet surface of the quay reflects the heavy overcast. One ripple distorts the light on the water's edge.
