Pearl Diver Surfaces at Santa Cruz Quay

by Louise Whitaker

Rain streaks fall vertically across the frame, blurring the wet concrete of the harbor quay near Santa Cruz de la Sierra. A pearl diver breaks the water's surface, their dark mesh bag filled with heavy shells resting against their shoulder. First light from the sunrise catches the droplets on the diver's skin and the glistening raincoat, creating a soft glow against the gray morning. The surrounding water churns gently where the diver emerges, while the empty quay stretches out in negative space. Raindrops ripple across the dark water, and the heavy fabric of the bag sags under the weight of the catch. One drop slides down the diver's cheek, merging with the rain.
