Cinnamon bark peeled on Sri Lankan cliff in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge in Sri Lanka

Cinnamon bark peeled on Sri Lankan cliff

by Thelma Hughes

A strip of rough cinnamon bark peels away from the dark trunk of a tree, revealing the lighter, fibrous layer beneath. The tree stands precariously along a salt-sprayed cliff edge where jagged rocks meet the void. Deep shadow swallows most of the foliage, yet a sharp rim light outlines the curling bark and the wet, saline texture of the cliff face. The sky above is a perfectly clear, deep black void, devoid of clouds or stars. Seasonal transition shows in the sparse, dry leaves clinging to the branches. The bark curls tightly, its edges catching the faint moonlight. One droplet of moisture hangs from the tip of the peeling strip, refracting the faint glow against the dark wood.
