Chandler Dipping Tallow Candles Low Angle

by Ronald Reilly

Heavy wet air hangs over a dim workshop in Puerto La Cruz as a chandler lowers a bundle of wicks into a large vat of molten tallow. Low tungsten light from a window casts warm amber pools on the thick liquid surface, highlighting the glossy sheen of the wax as it coats the fibers. The worker's hands grip the bundle firmly, fingers stained with grease, while heavy droplets form and drip back into the vat. Outside, the deep night sky presses down through the window frame, matching the heavy overcast clouds visible in the reflection on the metal rim. One bead of cooling wax rests on the bottom of a wick before falling.
