Candle Maker Dipping Wicks in Antigua Dawn

by Mark Armstrong

Sea spray hangs in the cool, still air of an Antigua workshop before sunrise, catching the soft, diffused dawn light. From an over-the-shoulder viewpoint, a chandler dips multiple cotton wicks into a large metal vat filled with glowing, molten tallow. The liquid surface ripples gently as the wicks emerge, coated in thick, translucent layers of yellow fat that begin to harden. Steam rises subtly from the hot wax, mingling with the damp mist outside the open doorway. Rough stone walls and weathered wooden beams frame the workspace, their textures highlighted by the low-angle morning glow. One wick, freshly pulled, drips a final bead of wax that catches the light before falling back into the vat.
