Cobbler Repairing Shoes in Predawn Candlelight
by Griffin Todd
Warm candlelight pools on a wooden workbench, illuminating the back of a cobbler hunched over a pair of worn leather shoes. The glow casts long, sharp shadows against the dark interior walls, highlighting the texture of cracked leather and the gleam of metal tools scattered nearby. Outside the open doorway, the cool season night stretches under a perfectly clear sky, its deep indigo hue against the amber firelight inside. Dust motes hang suspended in the air, caught in the beam of the single flame. The cobbler's hands move with practiced precision, stitching the sole while the rest of the room remains steeped in shadow. A small brass oil lamp sits on the edge of the table, its flame steady and low. at the edge is the rough grain of the wooden floorboards catching the faint reflection of the candle's flicker.
