Predawn Chameleon Strike at Mombasa Riverbank

by Orlando Hewitt

A beam of artificial light cuts through the predawn darkness, illuminating a vibrant green chameleon perched on a wet riverbank branch. Rain-slicked leaves glisten under the sweeping lighthouse beam that slices the black water behind. The reptile extends a long, pale pink tongue toward a dark cricket frozen in mid-air. Droplets of rain rest on the chameleon's textured scales and the surrounding foliage. The Dutch angle tilt creates a dynamic sense of motion against the shadowy river. Wet mud reflects the sharp cone of light. The tip of the tongue makes contact with the insect just as the beam shifts away into the gloom.
