Jamaican Chameleon Blue Hour Reed Bed in at the edge of a reed bed in Jamaica

Jamaican Chameleon Blue Hour Reed Bed

by Marian Jordan

Deep indigo shadows cloak the base of a Jamaican reed bed as the last light of day fades. A chameleon perches on a slender green stalk, its skin shifting through patches of mossy green and burnt orange against the encroaching twilight. A sharp rim of cool blue light traces the curve of its tail and the ridges of its back, separating the creature from the dark, vertical reeds behind it. Low haze hangs heavy near the horizon, softening the distant outline of the marsh. Droplets of rain rest on the textured surface of the leaves, catching the faint ambient glow. The reptile remains motionless, its eye rotating slowly over the wet, dark foreground.
