Brambled Courthouse Ruin at Blue Hour in through a courtyard reclaimed by grasses near Erzurum

Brambled Courthouse Ruin at Blue Hour

by Carrie McCoy

Late autumn grasses and thick brambles swallow the crumbling stone walls of a courthouse annex near Erzurum. The blue hour light reflects off a shallow pool in the courtyard, casting cool, shifting hues across the fractured masonry. Broken window frames hang open to the darkening sky, while wind ripples the tall reeds growing inside the empty rooms. The rough texture of moss-covered bricks contrasts with the smooth, dark water that mirrors the gray sky. A jagged crack in the central archway reveals a patch of dry earth beneath, at the base of the decay in the specific landscape of the Anatolian plateau.
