Crown Jellyfish in Kelp Light Kenya in along a kelp-fringed shelf in Kenya

Crown Jellyfish in Kelp Light Kenya

by Knox Trevino

Bright noon light fractures into dappled patterns across the translucent bell of a crown jellyfish. The creature undulates slowly, its delicate, crown-like tentacles trailing through water thick with a soft plankton haze. Surrounding the jellyfish, dark green kelp fronds line the rocky shelf, their edges sharp against the suspended particles. The water holds a flat, intense clarity typical of the dry season, with no shadows from above to obscure the subject. Fine textures on the jellyfish's surface catch the fragmented sunlight, creating a mosaic of white and pale amber. The scene ends on the trailing edge of a single tentacle dissolving into the hazy blue-green depth.
