Drifting Bioluminescent Jellyfish in Tropical Bay in near Dar es Salaam

Drifting Bioluminescent Jellyfish in Tropical Bay

by Chris Pena

Soft, diffused light falls through exceptionally clear water near the Dar es Salaam coast during the wet season. Several translucent jellyfish drift weightlessly in the mid-water column, their bell-shaped bodies glowing with faint blue-green bioluminescence against the deep azure backdrop. Slow-moving surface ripples distort the sunlight above, creating shifting patterns of brightness on the water's surface. The jellyfish tentacles trail behind them like fine, ghostly threads. A cluster of floating sea foam rests at the edge of the frame, marking the boundary between the open water and the bay's calm shoreline. The water's clarity reveals the delicate, veined texture of the creatures' transparent flesh.
