Basalt Ruins Above Black Sand Under Stone Arch

by Ariana Ballard

Rough-hewn basalt blocks form a crumbling ruin resting on a bed of coarse black volcanic sand. A broken stone arch frames the upper view, its weathered surface catching the harsh midmorning sun. Low-hanging clouds drift overhead, casting shifting shadows across the dark ground. Patches of green moss and small weeds sprout between the gray stones, marking nature's slow advance. The texture of the volcanic sand contrasts sharply with the smooth, dark rock of the arch. Sunlight illuminates the jagged edges of the basalt blocks, highlighting their porous structure. One crack in the arch reveals the sky beyond, at the base of the scene in the specific geology of Sololaki.
