Basalt Ruins in Almaty at Sunset

by Ingrid McKay

Dark basalt blocks form a roofless nave structure resting on black volcanic sand near Almaty. The sun dips low, casting long shadows across the uneven stone surfaces. Shafts of golden light pierce the open space, illuminating drifting dust particles that float in the air. Early spring grasses peek through cracks in the ancient masonry. The foreground features rough, weathered stones while layers of the ruin recede into the hazy distance. A final beam of light catches the edge of a fallen column, highlighting its texture against the deepening twilight.
