Autumn Sunset Over Sydney Chalk Cliff and Blue Sea
by Olive Avila
Pale limestone strata rise vertically from a dark, wave-sculpted shoreline, capped by a narrow band of autumnal green grass. The sea below shifts from deep cobalt to turquoise where the water breaks against the base of the cliff. Low-hanging gray clouds obscure the western horizon, diffusing the last light of the day into a soft, even glow that flattens the textures of the rock face. The grass blades stand stiff and dry, suggesting the early autumn chill, while the water surface remains relatively calm with only gentle ripples disturbing the reflection of the sky. One shadow stretches across the lower rock face, marking the exact moment the sun dips below the cloud layer. The limestone shows faint horizontal striations where rain has washed away softer sediment over time.
