Salt Pillars on Sydney Shore at Dawn in along a wave-cut shoreline near Newtown, Sydney

Salt Pillars on Sydney Shore at Dawn

by Edwin Goodman

Deep shadow blankets the wave-cut shoreline near Newtown, where late autumn chill settles before sunrise. White salt pillars rise from the wet sand like geologic monuments, their rough textures catching a sharp rim light from the darkening sky. Above, dramatic clouds stack in heavy grays and muted violets, pressing low against the horizon. The sand appears dark and saturated, against the pale mineral formations that stand stark against the gloom. Along the water's edge, a thin line of foam rests on the base of the nearest pillar, marking the recent retreat of the tide. The scene holds a silent, heavy stillness as the light begins to define the jagged edges of the salt.
