Astronomer Securing Observatory Dome Chain in Winter in at a remote field station in Washington

Astronomer Securing Observatory Dome Chain in Winter

by Bobby Baker

Soft, diffused winter light flattens the gray sky over a remote Washington field station. A lone astronomer stands on a metal walkway, fingers working a heavy steel chain to secure the rotating dome of an observatory. The subject wears a thick, dark parka against the dead of winter chill. Small indicator lights embedded in the metal housing glow with steady amber and green reflections, casting faint colored highlights on the wet, riveted steel surfaces. Rain threatens the air, visible as a fine mist clinging to the dark evergreen trees in the background. The chain links hang heavy and cold, against the smooth, curved metal of the dome. A red warning light blinks rhythmically near the base of the structure, its reflection shimmering on the slick, gray pavement where the observer stands.
