Rajasthan Alluvial Fan Staircase Silhouette
by Laurie Rush
Deep shadows swallow the base of a sprawling alluvial fan where coarse gravel spills from a canyon mouth across the Rajasthan valley floor. A stark rim light cuts a sharp edge along the fan's ridge, isolating the dark silhouette against a perfectly clear, pale morning sky. Embedded within the geologic slope, a stone staircase defies physics: one flight climbs upward while another descends from the exact same landing, both constructed of rough-hewn rock that matches the surrounding terrain. The cool season air leaves the stones dry and textured, their surfaces catching no light until the bright morning sun strikes the highest peaks. The impossible dual-path structure anchors the landscape, its steps fading into the gravel dust at the canyon entrance. One shadow stretches long across the valley floor, marking the precise angle of the rising sun.
