Copper Toned Alluvial Fan Near Tucson Before Dusk

by Ricky DeLeon

Heat haze shimmers above the broad, fan-shaped deposit of sediment spreading from the canyon mouth. The ground displays a mosaic of gravel, sand, and sparse desert scrub in shades of ochre, rust, and dusty gray. Horizon light wraps the landscape in warm copper tones, casting long, soft shadows across the uneven terrain. Dry washes cut through the fan, their channels marked by darker stones and eroded earth. The distant canyon walls rise steeply, framing the debris field in deep relief. A thin layer of atmospheric dust softens the far edges where the land meets the sky. The texture of the fan shifts from coarse boulders near the source to fine silt at the outer rim. One rock rests on the smoothest patch of sand near the foreground edge.
