River Braiding Through Nevada Floodplain in across a floodplain after rain in Nevada

River Braiding Through Nevada Floodplain

by Jim Mathis

Low sun strikes the horizon haze, illuminating the pale blue-gray sky above a vast gravel floodplain in Nevada. A river splits into multiple braided channels that weave across the stony terrain, their surfaces reflecting the cool predawn light. Thick ground fog pools in the lowest depressions between the gravel bars, softening the edges of the scattered rocks. The water moves slowly, carving distinct paths through the coarse sediment. Late spring greenery rests on the distant riverbanks, against the muted tones of the dry gravel. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the uneven ground, defining the depth of the channel banks. The foreground reveals a cluster of smooth, water-worn stones resting beside the active stream.
