Alluvial Fan Near Muscat in Late Summer Light
by Silas Reid
Copper-toned light washes over a sprawling alluvial fan extending from a canyon mouth near Muscat. The fan's surface displays intricate sedimentary patterns, with fine grains of sand and gravel radiating outward in fan-shaped veins. Late summer heat shimmers above the ground, distorting the horizon slightly. Wind whips across the arid terrain, lifting tiny dust particles that blur the edges of rock formations. The canyon walls rise steeply on one side, casting long shadows that stretch across the fan's apex. Dry scrub vegetation clings to scattered boulders, their muted greens against the warm ochre and rust tones of the exposed earth. The texture of the fan shifts from coarse debris near the source to smoother, finer deposits at the distal edges. One shadow of a loose stone falls sharply across the rippled sand, anchoring the composition.
