Rain-slicked cobblestones in a narrow Trastevere alley reflect the pale, diffused sky as a baker emerges from a bakery doorway, wiping flour from his hands while adjusting a metal latch on the heavy wooden door. A weathered garden rake leans against the damp brick wall nearby, its tines catching the first light, while a window box above overflows with sage leaves that drip water onto a patch of crazed majolica glaze from a broken tile on the sill.
