Arranging Crates in Rome
Damp evening light falls through the heavy rain onto a narrow Roman alley where a local greengrocer arranges crates of zucchini under a striped canvas awning. Water beads on the green plastic mesh and drips steadily from the corrugated metal roof edge onto the wet cobblestones below. A faded blue and white porcelain jar sits precariously on a wooden crate, its glaze reflecting the orange glow of a nearby streetlamp, while a rusted cabinet latch on a side door catches the dim light. Pedestrians in dark coats hurry past, umbrellas tilted against the wind, their reflections blurring in the puddles that mirror the shop’s warm interior and the grey sky above.
