Customer in Rome at Early Morning Light
by Leon Meza
Cool blue light spills across the narrow Via dei Coronari, illuminating a street vendor’s cart where a baker is stacking warm bread. A painted wooden crate, faded from sun and rain, serves as a makeshift shelf for a coil of rope and a worn dust mop leaning against the cart’s metal leg. The vendor, bundled in a thick wool sweater, laughs with a customer, his breath visible in the chill air. Behind them, the ancient stone facade of a palazzo rises, its windows reflecting the pale morning sky. The quiet, candid energy of Rome waking up, with the rough texture of the crate contrasting against the smooth, warm loaf of bread.
