Sweeping Rainwater in Florence in in Florence, Italy

Sweeping Rainwater in Florence

by Vanessa Marsh

A narrow Florence alley glistens under the heavy, diffused light of early morning, the wet cobblestones reflecting the pale sky and the terracotta roofs above. Rain has just ceased, leaving puddles that mirror the arched passageways and the weathered stucco of the surrounding buildings. A local artisan, wearing a faded blue apron, is sweeping water toward a drain near the entrance of a small bottega, the rhythmic motion of the broom creating soft ripples in the shallow runoff. Beside him, a stack of wooden crates rests against the wall, one slightly open to reveal fresh basil and sprigs of rosemary, their green leaves vibrant against the gray stone.
