A dense-furred Chow Chow stands in tight profile against a weathered gray concrete wall in a Guiyang courtyard. The animal's ruff flares outward with coarse, silver-tipped guard hairs that catch the flat glare of midday sun. Deep-set dark eyes look past the lens with a guarded expression, while the small triangular ears remain folded low against the skull. Late autumn is visible in the scattered dry leaves and the slightly damp patches on the stone ground where rain recently receded. The high-contrast grain of the scene emphasizes the texture of the thick undercoat against the smooth, unadorned masonry. Dust motes hover in the harsh light above the dog's broad muzzle, and one drop of water clings to a whisker near the jawline.
