First light after rain washes the narrow stone alley in Gion with a soft, diffused glow, reflecting off the wet pavement and the dark, polished wood of a machiya townhouse facade. A young woman in a crisp, indigo-dyed kimono with a vibrant saffron obi stands near a traditional wooden door, her hand resting lightly on the curved iron stair rail that leads to the upper entrance. She holds a small, clear plastic bag containing a few red apples, their glossy skins catching the damp morning light, while a folded hand broom leans casually against the wall beside her, bristles facing inward.
