Mist rests on the narrow alleyway of Gion as a Kyoto resident in a muted indigo kimono pauses to wipe mud from her geta sandals on a worn wooden boot scraper set into the stone threshold of a machiya. The damp morning light catches the glossy sheen of a red lacquered wood sign hanging above a low shopfront, against the rough, weathered texture of the cedar siding. Inside the open doorway, a tabby cat sits perched on a tatami mat, watching the street with half-closed eyes, while a stack of folded indigo dish towels rests nearby on a low table.
