Entrance Corridor in Kyoto

by Hiroshi Williamson

A narrow Kyoto machiya corridor glistens under the wet, gray diffusion of early morning light, where rain has just ceased. The perspective follows the dark, polished cedar floorboards leading toward a sliding shoji screen partially drawn, revealing a glimpse of a tatami room. On a low wooden step near the entrance, a simple ceramic flowerpot holds a single, water-heavy camellia branch, its red petals stark against the muted wood tones. Beside it, a pair of geta sandals rests neatly, their wooden teeth damp with condensation.
