Wet Towels in Kyoto

by Autumn Langley

A narrow Kyoto machiya corridor glistens with the sheen of recent rain, the wet dark wood floor reflecting the pale, diffused light of early morning. A local vendor in a simple indigo apron stands near the entrance, carefully folding a stack of thick, white cotton dish towels that have just been rinsed and hung to dry. The towels, damp and heavy, hang from a low bamboo line strung across the entryway, their wet fabric clinging to the air. Raindrops bead on the eaves above, dripping steadily onto the stone steps.
