Sweeping Rain in Kyoto

by Erik Rutledge

Rain-slicked wooden steps lead down to a narrow Kyoto alley where a shopkeeper in a indigo happi coat sweeps water from the entrance with a bamboo rake. The early morning light catches the wet slate of the machiya roof tiles above, reflecting a soft, diffuse glow on the dark wood grain of the doorframe. A small ceramic mug sits precariously on a low stone lantern near the threshold, steaming slightly in the cool air. Beyond the immediate foreground, the alley stretches into a misty grey, lined with hanging noren curtains that hang heavy and damp.
